The most rare of all natural gemstones.
The word emerald comes from the Greek word smaragdos, which means “green gem”. Emeralds are among the most rare gemstones and are typically mined in Colombia, Brazil, Afghanistan and Zambia. This regally beautiful gemstone symbolizes rebirth, loyalty, faithfulness, love, and eternal youth. As the gem of Venus, it was also considered to aid in fertility. Emeralds are a symbol of the spring season and the official birthstone of the month of May.
What Is An Emerald?
Emerald is a precious gemstone and a variety of the mineral beryl, a family that includes aquamarine (blue beryl), heliodor (yellow beryl), morganite (pink beryl), and red beryl. Its green color is the result of chromium and sometimes vanadium. Emeralds are ranked at 7.5 – 8 on the Mohs scale, a scale used to determine hardness. In general, Emeralds have many inclusions so their toughness and resistance to breakage is considered poor. Unlike diamonds, inclusions are expected and do not detract from the value of the stone as much.
Cultural Significance of Emeralds
Historically, emeralds are most commonly associated with Cleopatra, the tantalizing Pharaoh of Egypt. She was so enthralled with emeralds that she had her own emerald mines. Her love for emeralds was known worldwide and loose emeralds were brought to her as gifts from the most regal dignitaries. Egyptian mummies were adorned with emeralds around their necks as a sign of eternal youth. Although Cleopatra’s emeralds have yet to be found, historians associate this magnificent gemstone with her.
